Packing List for Your MTB Holiday: What You Actually Need
Overpacking? Forgetting the essentials? We've all been there. Whether it's your first MTB retreat or your fifth, knowing what to bring can make the difference between a smooth, comfortable trip and a frustrating one. So we’ve put together the ultimate SheRides-approved packing list — no fluff, just the stuff you’ll actually use.
✅ Bike Gear Essentials
If you’re bringing your own bike (or hiring locally), make sure you’ve got the following sorted:
Your mountain bike, fully serviced and in good working order
Helmet (a well-fitted trail helmet is a must)
Gloves, preferably full-finger for protection
Protective gear (knee pads are recommended; elbow pads optional)
Spare tube / tubeless plugs, tyre levers, multitool
Mini pump
Hydration pack or water bottle
Bike shoes (flats or clipless – bring what you ride in comfortably)
Bike lock (for travel & storage peace of mind)
Riding backpack or hip pack
👚 What to Wear on the Trails
Weather in the Alps can change quickly, so layering is key. Here's what to pack:
2–3 riding long sleeves or t-shirts
1–2 pairs of MTB shorts or trousers
Base layers (great for cooler mornings)
Lightweight waterproof jacket
Socks
Comfortable active underwear
Sunglasses or riding glasses
Tip: It’s handy to bring a few outfit options so you’re not always in muddy kit!
🧘 Off-the-Bike Comforts
You’ll want some cosy clothes for mornings, evenings, and chill time between rides:
Comfy loungewear or joggers
Swimsuit (for the hot tub!)
Comfy shoes for around the chalet (not a requirement, just for comfort)
Smart(ish) casual evening wear if you're heading out for dinner on the host’s night off (it’s a MTB town, not a red carpet event)
Yoga gear if you're joining morning sessions (mats provided)
Lightweight puffer or warm layer for alpine evenings
Small day bag for town trips and strolls
A good book to relax with
Earbuds/ headphones
🛀 Toiletries & Extras
We keep it simple, but here are a few extras that always come in handy:
SPF & lip balm with sun protection is always a good shout too
Any medication or supplements you normally use
Travel adapter (for EU plugs)
Ear plugs & eye mask (useful if people are going to bed at different times)
Shampoo, conditioner and body wash
Period products (the local shop is usually pretty well stocked in case of emergencies)
📝 Optional but Nice-to-Haves
A journal (incase you enjoy reflecting on the trip)
Camera or GoPro
Snacks for the trails (though we’ll have plenty stocked)
Any at home favourites goodies that you might not be able to get in resort (don’t worry we’ll have proper British tea)
E-SIM card, you’ll have Wi-Fi in the chalet, but if your provider doesn’t cover France (or Switzerland, if you're flying into Geneva and want to use your phone before crossing the border), an e-SIM is an easy and often cheaper way to stay connected while abroad.
Don’t Forget Your Paperwork
Valid passport
Travel insurance that covers MTB
Booking confirmation + retreat info (no need to print anything just have it saved in a handy place on your phone)
EHIC/GHIC card (if you’re from the UK)
